The Harry Butler Science Centre (HBSC) at Murdoch University is a visionary initiative honouring the legacy of Dr Harry Butler AO CBE, fostering meaningful connections between community, Country, and cutting-edge scientific research. Situated on Whadjuk Noongar Country, the Centre stands as a landmark of environmental leadership, cultural learning, and innovation.

Artify has been engaged to provide Public Art Coordination services, facilitating a highly collaborative process alongside Woods Bagot, Ecoscape, UDLA and Murdoch University, with selected artists Ilona McGuire and Marcia McGuire, to realise an integrated public artwork within the project.

The commission centres on the Arrival and Collaboration Space, an important transition between the academic and ecological zones of campus that welcomes students, school groups, researchers, and the broader public. As a meaningful first encounter with the Centre and the wetlands it celebrates, the space calls for an artwork grounded in the themes central to the HBSC: working with nature, stories of place, resilience and care for Country. Environmental narratives including wetlands ecology, banksia regeneration, seasonal shifts, and water conservation are shaping the artist's response.

Artify's scope spans the full delivery pathway: from artist procurement, artist brief and artist selection through to concept design, design development and fabrication. The project is currently progressing through the concept design stage. The integrated nature of the work, potentially realised through amphitheatre paving and other embedded elements, will ensure it forms a cohesive and enduring part of the built environment rather than a standalone gesture.
