Public Transport Authority
Urban Art Program 2026–2029 /

CLIENT: Public Transport Authority

SECTOR: Transport

LOCATION: WA

TIMEFRAME: 2026-current

The Public Transport Authority engaged Artify to manage the next phase of its Urban Art Program, a statewide initiative that turns transport infrastructure into vibrant public places across Western Australia's public transport network. The program is delivered on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja and across the wider network, establishing a pre-qualified register of artists to deliver large scale murals over three years.

Building on the success of the 2025 program, which delivered nine large scale murals across the Yanchep, Midland, Armadale and Mandurah lines and transformed more than 2,100 square metres of infrastructure, the 2026 to 2029 phase aims to commission up to 30 new murals and transform around 5,000 square metres. The work celebrates local identity, enriches the passenger experience and contributes to safer, more welcoming environments, while deterring graffiti and vandalism through high quality, curated public art.

At the heart of the program is a pre-qualified artist register, opening the opportunity to one of the state's largest and most visible public art initiatives. Assessment recognises creative potential alongside professional experience and technical capability, welcoming applications from early career through to established mural artists, whether based in Perth, regional WA, interstate or overseas. The approach deliberately makes room for a diverse range of artists, including Aboriginal and emerging artists, and supports professional development and economic opportunity for the state's artists and the local suppliers who work with them.

Some commissions incorporate community engagement through the PTA's Education Program, giving artists the chance to work alongside schools, children and young people as part of the creative process. Selected artists work closely with the PTA Education Team to shape site responsive works that reflect local stories and identities.

Artify guides the program through a streamlined two stage procurement process, from an open call for pre-qualification through Tenders WA to Requests for Quote for individual sites as they become available. The role spans program and budget oversight, curatorial development, artist liaison and delivery of the murals across a diverse range of transport infrastructure throughout the state.
